3 Homeopathic Remedies for Children’s Cold and Allergy Symptoms

When allergy season hits it tends to affect the little ones the hardest. Runny noses, dry coughs, itchy eyes, and sore throats are just a few of the symptoms that can make any child miserable. Medicating with heavy antihistamines and decongestants only leave them groggy and feeling restless. A better way to treat children for seasonal allergies is to employ homeopathic health. Here are 3 Homeopathic remedies for children’s most common allergy symptoms.

  • Sabadil Tablets – Temporarily relieves one or more of these symptoms of hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies: itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and itchy throat and nose.
  • Optique 1 Eye Drops  – These eye drops provide for temporary relief of minor eye irritation from airborne irritants such as ragweed, pollen and dust.
  • Histaminum hydrochloricum – A homeopathic remedy that is commonly used for allergies, asthma, bronchitis, and muscular and joint pain. It is made from histamine dihydrochloride. It is thought to work by decreasing the amount of histamine released during an allergic response and thereby reducing the effects.

These options are easily attainable and most importantly – safe. When used in conjunction with simple saline nasal spray and good hygiene, you may find that treating your child’s seasonal allergy symptoms may come and go as easily as the seasons do.

Using Homeopathic Treatments to Combat Seasonal Allergies

Spring has sprung, the flowers are in bloom, the grass is growing, and if you have seasonal allergies – you just added tissues to your weekly shopping list. There are plenty of medications that have been designed to help with the symptoms that seasonal allergies bring, however, it is possible to treat them without clouding yourself with medications.

The first way to bring relief from seasonal allergies is try homeopathic health. Working with a homeopathic allergist, options for treating seasonal allergies include taking a homeopathic dosage of the allergen (30C) at the onset of symptoms to build a tolerance. For example, if one of your triggers is grass, you would incorporate the proper dosage of the chemical component of grass to essentially build a physical tolerance to the reaction that is normally caused by it. Other ways to use homeopathy for seasonal allergies such as hay fever is to utilize Galphimia glauca 3X, 4X, 4C, or 6C. Essentially, adding these homeopathic treatments are going to help your body become accustomed to the triggers for Hay fever and subsequently eliminate the symptoms.

Another way to find relief from seasonal allergies is a more natural approach. Treatments such as honey have long been utilized to help treat allergies. The theory is that bees consume pollen; often times the pollen that triggers seasonal allergies. When we use locally produced honey, we in turn consume honey produced with the same pollen allergens that often cause allergy symptoms. In theory, we ingest a homeopathic dosage of the allergens by eating the local honey. It’s like a mini allergy shot with no side effects.

With these options, it is possible to have relief from seasonal allergies without the side effects associated with common allergy medications. With a homeopathic allergist and some local honey, seasonal allergies could become a thing of the past, allowing you to smell the roses.

How Cher, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Tina Turner Use Homeopathic Health

The study of Homeopathy is not particular new, nor is it excessively common. But it is gaining attention with some of entertainments biggest players. Cher, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Tina Turner all have homeopathic remedies that they use or have used to combat injury and illness.

Cher, a multi Grammy and Academy award winner, certainly has a resume that exhibits her energy and flare for the industry. However, in 1987 Cher was struck down by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and multiple bouts of Pneumonia that disabled her for over 2 years. After working with doctors that were unsympathetic and unsuccessful, Cher finally sought out a holistic doctor that used homeopathic treatments and vitamins such as B12 to finally get the star back on her feet.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Academy award winning actress best known for her work in the blockbuster “Chicago” also turned to homeopathic remedies while filming the theatrical movie. While doing dance work and routines for the movie, the actress had a hamstring injury that could have stopped production. Instead, she applied Arnica and was quoted as saying there was essentially no pain to her hamstring while using it and it brought out all of the bruising that she would have had. She still calls the therapy her best friend.

Tina Turner, seven time Grammy award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, was surprisingly diagnosed with tuberculosis in the mid 70’s. After trying conventional medicine to combat the disease without success, she turned to Chandra Sharma, a Homeopathic M.D. Dr. Sharma treated Tina with homeopathic and natural medicines that not only allowed her to continue performing her high energy musical performances, but essentially cured her within six weeks. Although, Dr. Sharma has since passed away, Tina still follows a homeopathic lifestyle with Dr. Sharma’s son, Rajendra Sharma, M.D. to this day.

Choosing to treat illness with homeopathy can show great results overall. This is proven by some of entertainments busiest and most productive players. Cher, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Tina Turner were able to maintain their lives and livelihood by embracing homeopathic health.

Homeopathic Remedies for an Ear Infection

Otitis Media is the Latin name for the common middle ear infection associated with a cold or respiratory infection. It usually involves one ear, but it can be both. Pain is generally intense and can come on quickly.

The following homeopathic remedies are indispensable for those suffering with ear pain:

Belladonna This remedy is for symptoms that come on quickly with a lot of pain. Symptoms can be accompanied by high fever and the person's ear may be red externally. When examined, the ear canal may be bright red. On observation, the person's face may be red, their pupils may be dilated and they will often feel hot to the touch on the head and cool to the touch on the hands and feet. A person who needs this remedy will also be very sensitive to light and noise and may be restless and excited.

Chamomilla People who need this remedy are often quite irritable and uncomfortable with the pain. The ear ache can accompany teething in young children or the eruption of wisdom teeth in older teens. In children the pain can feel severe and they may demand to be carried or will be quite irritable.

On observation, the person may appear to have one cheek that is bright red and the other cheek pale. Diarrhea can also be present in the person who needs this remedy.

Hepar Sulphuris Usually this remedy is appropriate when the person feels very chilly and sweats easily and when the ear ache is accompanied by a dry, hoarse, barking cough.

Discharges may be yellow and thick and the pains are splinter-like or darting through the ear. The ear may be sensitive to touch and the pain may feel out of proportion to the actual pain.

The person may be oversensitive to touch, noise, smell and cool drafts or temperature fluctuations.

Pulsatilla A person who needs this remedy may be quite tearful or whiny when they are suffering with ear pain and may desire comfort or affection. The ear pain is usually associated with a cold that produces a thick, bland, greenish-yellow discharge from the nose.

The person usually craves the fresh air and is generally thirstless. Usually little or no appetite is present.

Remedy Guidelines

  • The indicated remedy can be taken in 6C, 30X or 30C potency.
  • Take the medicine according to the severity of the symptoms: Take it more often, such as every one to two hours, if the symptoms are severe, and less often, like every three to four hours, if they are not too bad.
  • Stop the remedy if there are any signs of significant improvement.
  • If you take about six to eight doses and see no response to the symptoms, then it’s likely to be the wrong remedy. Select another remedy or seek professional help.

In addition to the homeopathic remedies listed above, one can add five drops of warmed garlic and mullein oil into the ear canal. People should not do this, however, if there is any discharge coming out of the ear.

Warm compresses also can alleviate some of the pain.

Homeopathy for Wheat Allergy

Reviewed & edited by Julie A. Cerrato, PhD

Wheat allergies are among the top eight food allergies in the United States and are most often seen in children. Although some children outgrow this allergy, approximately three-quarters of all grain products contain wheat flour, making allergies to wheat increasingly difficult to manage.i

Being allergic to wheat is different than having a sensitivity to wheat gluten or celiac disease. While the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness estimates that 18 million Americans have a gluten sensitivityii, wheat allergies are more rare and result from a local or systemic immunological reaction against various proteins found in wheat, but do not necessarily interfere with digestion. Individuals with a wheat sensitivity react non-specifically to gluten protein and individuals with celiac disease suffer from an antibody-specific abnormal immune reaction to gliadin, a type of gluten protein found in wheat, that results in a change in the intestinal villi and interferes with nutrient absorptioniii.

An individual with a wheat allergy may notice symptoms within minutes to hours after ingesting something containing wheat or if their skin comes in contact with a product containing wheat. Wheat allergy symptoms may include swelling, itching, or irritation of the mouth or throat, itchy or swollen skin, nasal congestion, headache, itchy or watery eyes, difficulty breathing, cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and digestive disturbances. In some cases, more severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis, characterized by swelling of the airways, may occur. While the conventional approach of dealing with a wheat allergy involves avoidance of the allergen, it is possible that one can use homeopathy to treat wheat allergy flare-ups.

Homeopathy, an alternative medical system developed in Germany more than 200 years ago, employs the “law of similars,” a healing principal that uses “like to cure like.” Subscribing to the philosophy that a substance that produces symptoms in a healthy person can be used to cure the same symptoms in an ailing person, homeopathic practitioners treat patients with minute doses of natural remedies to induce immunity. These substances, typically diluted to include one part remedy to approximately 1,000,000,000,000 parts water, are given to patients to promote a low level immune reaction. The body then responds in moderation to the antigen and builds up a tolerance over time, instead of having an immediate, full-blown, allergic reaction with potentially severe or life-threatening symptoms. In essence, homeopathy views the individual’s specific pattern of response to an allergen, both at the physical and psychological level, as more important than the identity of the allergen.

Under the care of a homeopathic provider, sufferers of wheat allergies may develop immune tolerance to wheat proteins and lessen or eliminate their response to wheat. Some common homeopathic remedies for treating wheat allergies include arsenicum album and histaminum hydrochloricum.

Arsenicum album has been used as a remedy to treat the symptoms of restlessness, exhaustion and digestive upset, and may help alleviate these symptoms experienced by individuals who are highly sensitive to foods such as those with a wheat allergy. Homeopathic formulas of arsenicum album are created from the processing of arsenic and a physician should be consulted prior to its use. Arsenicum album is often taken at a 30c potency every 30-60 minutes during an acute attack, or twice a day during an ongoing allergic reaction. Administration of the remedy is ceased once signs of improvement are noticeable.

The homeopathic remedy histaminum hydrochloricum is made from histamine dihydrochloride and is primarily used to treat various allergies, including those from food, and may be useful for individuals with a wheat allergyiv. Histaminum hydrochloricum is also an ingredient in the brand Zicam Allergy Relief Nasal Gelv and is often used to treat respiratory disorders such as asthma, bronchitis, or colds and sinusitis. According to Boiron USA, their histaminum hydrochloricum product is available for adults and children two years of age and older at 3X to 30X- 3C to 30C HPUS and is used by dissolving five pellets under the tongue three times a day until symptoms are relieved or as per a physician’s directionvi.

If suffering from wheat allergy, consider homeopathy as a way of treating symptoms that range from swelling and itching to nausea and digestive disturbances. Use arsenicum album and histaminum hydrochloricum to increase your tolerance of gluten protein, and be mindful of food triggers that may stimulate wheat allergies.

Introduction to Homeopathy

1. Definition
Homeopathy is a system for the treatment of disease by minute doses of natural substances that in a healthy person would produce symptoms of disease.

2. Founder
Homeopathy originated in the late 18th century with the German physician Samuel Hahnemann.

3. Law of Similars (Like Cures Like)
The same substance that in large doses produces the symptoms of an illness, in very minute does cure it.

4. Minimal Dose
A remedy is taken in an extremely dilute form; normally one part of the remedy to around 1,000,000,000,000 parts of water.

5. Single Remedy
No matter how many symptoms are experienced, only one remedy is taken, and that remedy is aimed at all those symptoms.

6. Natural
Homeopathic remedies are generally based on natural ingredients from plants, minerals and animals.

7. Clinical Trials
Homeopathic remedies have been shown to have no measurable effect beyond placebo even though millions of people testify to their effectiveness.

8. FDA
Homeopathic remedies are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the FDA does not evaluate the remedies for safety or effectiveness.

9. Growth
Homeopathy is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world. Its growth in popularity in the United States has exceeded 25% a year for the last decade.

10. Whole You
Homeopathy is holistic. It treats all the symptoms as one, which in practical terms means that it addresses the cause, not the symptoms.

Treatment

Homeopathy

Homeopathy as a treatment has existed for more than 200 years and is gaining greater acceptance in many countries, particularly the United States. It was developed and put into practice by a German physician – Samuel Hahnemann. Since the days of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and till today an attending physician of the royal family is traditionally a homeopath.

The difference of homeopathic remedies from traditional drugs is incorporated in the name of “homeopathy” (homois – like, pathos – sickness, suffering). The basic principle of homeopathy is the similarity between a cure and an illness.

The treatment of a disease requires application of small amounts of substances that in large doses cause a healthy person to suffer phenomena with similar clinical presentation (i.e., complaints and symptoms) of a patient.

Here is a simple example: when people cut onions, their eyes tear and suffer a running nose – in short, it is the same effect as a cold or an allergic reaction. By deriving medicines from onions, homeopaths successfully treat a common cold, allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis. This is the principle of similarity.

Homeopathy does not seek to replace conventional antibiotics, sulfonamides and other anti-inflammatory drugs, but offer a complementary approach to preventing and healing illness.

How It Works

A specially trained pharmacist is responsible for preparing homeopathic medicines. They combine one part of a starting material and 99 parts of solvent – distilled water or alocohol. This is the first dilution. Then, one part of the first dilution is combined with 99 parts of a new solvent. Such a process is repeated multiple times. Homeopathic medicines are issued in dilution (potency) in the form of granules, drops or tablets. A dose is assigned individually and may change during treatment.

As supplements, they are usually taken 15-20 minutes before a meal or 1 hour after a meal. In acute conditions, a frequent intake (every 10-30 minutes) may be prescribed. Treatment duration, frequency and amount depend on the dynamics of the condition being treated.

A homeopath usually learns a history of a patient, conducts examination and communication with a patient to determine constitutional and personal traits. Only after this, a tactic of homeopathic treatment is produced. The raw materials for traditional homeopathic medicines are substances of plant, animal and mineral origin.

Benefits

The main advantages of homeopathy are:

  • Friendliness and safety
  • An individual approach to a patient
  • The use of medicine in small doses
  • The absence of addiction and withdrawal syndrome
  • The ability to use multiple medicines at the same time
  • The possibility of a combination of traditional and other treatments
  • Treatment of all age groups, ranging from fetal and neonatal period

Precautions

Homeopathy can be used for many types of conditions, but is difficult to treat people intoxicated with chemicals and people who are sick with serious illnesses: cancer, multiple sclerosis, etc. In such cases, homeopathy can only reduce a disease. Sometimes homeopathic medicines can exacerbate the symptoms one is experiencing. In such cases, the dose or frequency of administration should be reduced or temporarily discontinued.

Summary

Homeopathy is based in two primary theories:

  1. “Like cures Like” – a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people.
  2. “Law of Minimum Dose”- the lower the dose of the medication, the greater its effectiveness. Some homeopathic remedies are so diluted that no molecules of the original substance remain.
